Bratislava's Christmas markets fill the Main Square (Hlavné námestie) and Hviezdoslav Square every Advent, and they make an easy day trip from Vienna, about an hour away.
The official dates for 2026 are on Visit Bratislava, the city's tourist board. The detailed programme of concerts comes out in November; we will add it here.
The quick answer
The Bratislava Christmas markets 2026 run from 26 November 2026 to 3 January 2027 on the Main Square and Hviezdoslav Square, daily from 10:00 to 22:00, closed on 24 and 25 December. The trees are lit at the official opening on 26 November at 18:00. From Vienna, take the train or bus any day, or the Advent catamaran on Fridays to Sundays.
When is the Bratislava Christmas market 2026?
From Thursday 26 November 2026 to Sunday 3 January 2027, daily from 10:00 to 22:00, except 24 and 25 December.
The official opening is on 26 November at 18:00, when the Christmas trees on both squares are lit and Advent begins. From then on the stalls open every day at 10:00 and close at 22:00. The two exceptions are Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, when the market is closed, as Visit Bratislava states.
That makes the first weekend, 27 to 29 November, the earliest full weekend, and Boxing Day and the days around New Year the last chances.

| Thu 26 November, 18:00 | Official opening, trees lit on both squares |

Where are the Christmas markets in Bratislava?
On the Main Square (Hlavné námestie) and Hviezdoslav Square in the Old Town, with a Christmas Forest on Primatial Square next door.
The Main Square is the heart of it, below the Old Town Hall tower. A covered, wheelchair-accessible Friendly Zone there gives families, seniors and anyone who needs a break a quieter spot. Next to it, on Primatial Square, the Christmas Forest shows trees decorated by children from local schools; from 15 December the trees go to families and charities.
Hviezdoslav Square, the long promenade by the Slovak National Theatre, is the second market. The city also lists Advent events elsewhere in Bratislava; its 2026 programme will be published in November.

What can you eat and drink at the Bratislava Christmas market?
Slovak classics such as kapustnica (sauerkraut soup) and langoš, international food such as bao and gyoza, and mead, mulled wine, grog or fruit wine.
The tourist board lists traditional Slovak and international Christmas food on the Main Square, from kapustnica and langoš to bao and gyoza, with vegetarian and vegan options. To drink there is mead, mulled wine, grog and fruit wine, plus beer and soft drinks for children.
Cups work on a deposit: you can return yours at any stall, under the motto "One city, one place, one returnable cup". Four waste sorting stations stand around the market. For presents look for candles, decorations, handmade crafts and the stalls run by non-profit organisations.
How do you get to the Bratislava Christmas market from Vienna?
By train or bus on any day, or by Twin City Liner catamaran on Advent weekends: 10:30 from Vienna, 16:30 back from Bratislava.
The Twin City Liner runs Advent cruises every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 27 November to 20 December, and on Tuesday 8 December. The boat reaches Bratislava at 11:45 and leaves at 16:30. It is a lovely way in, but you head back just as the lights start to matter.
To stay into the evening, go by train or bus. Our train guide has tickets and stations; the regular Slovak Lines bus from Vienna Hauptbahnhof stops at Most SNP, at the edge of the Old Town. Bring a passport or ID card: Austria and Slovakia are both in Schengen, but tour operators and the boat ask for one.
| Option | Days | Time in Bratislava |
|---|---|---|
| Advent catamaran | Fri to Sun, 8 December | 11:45 to 16:30 |
| Train or bus | Every day | As long as you like |
| Private or small-group tour | Every day | Set by the tour |
Which tours from Vienna include the Christmas market?
None list it as a stop, but the private and small-group days leave room for it, and guests have ended the day at the stalls.
On the private local-guide tour you choose the route. A December 2025 guest asked to finish at the Christmas markets and the guide reordered the day to make it happen. The small-group trip from Vienna gives about two hours of free time after a guided walk, guests report, enough for a lap of the stalls; one guest's visit happened to fall on the market's opening day.
Already in Bratislava? The tip-based city and castle walk moves its meeting point during the markets: the guide waits to the left of and behind the main stage.

Ask your guide to end the day at the market: a private guide from Vienna, lunch included.

Bratislava Castle's museum opens daily except Tuesday and Devín Castle from Tuesday to Sunday until 16:00. The Christmas tram's 2026 dates come from the city transport company.
The castle museum opens from 10:00 to 18:00 every day except Tuesday, and the castle grounds stay open until 22:00. Devín Castle is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 16:00 in winter and closed on 24, 25, 26 and 31 December. Our winter day trip post has the day-by-day plan.
The Christmas Tram is part of Advent in Bratislava too. Its 2026 dates are not out yet; the city transport company DPB publishes them, as Visit Bratislava notes.
