Booking choice: Bratislava and Devín Castle, from $98 per person. Check dates Tour details
Bratislava works well as a winter day trip. The Old Town is compact, the cafés are warm, and in Advent the squares fill with market stalls. A few things change after the summer, though, and two of them catch people out: the Twin City Liner stops, and the two castles close on different days of the week.
Everything below comes from the official pages of the Slovak National Museum, the Bratislava City Museum and the Twin City Liner, checked for winter 2026-27.
The quick answer
After 2 November the Twin City Liner only sails on Advent weekends (27 November to 20 December). Bratislava Castle's museum keeps its hours all winter, 10:00 to 18:00, but is closed on Tuesdays. Devín Castle is closed on Mondays and from November to February opens 10:00 to 16:00, with adult tickets at 6 euros. The Christmas market runs from 26 November to 3 January. Wednesday to Sunday are the days when both castles are open.
What changes for the Bratislava day trip from November 2026?
Four things: the boat stops, Devín Castle shortens its hours, the Christmas market opens, and the classic coach-and-boat tour moves its meeting point.
- The Twin City Liner ends its high season on 2 November. It sails again only for Advent cruises on Fridays to Sundays and 8 December, from 27 November to 20 December.
- Devín Castle closes at 16:00 from November to February, and adult tickets drop to 6 euros from November to March.
- The Christmas market runs on the Main Square and Hviezdoslav Square from 26 November to 3 January; see our Christmas market post.
- The coach and catamaran day meets at the Vienna International Bus Terminal from November to March instead of the State Opera.
Is Bratislava Castle open in winter?
Yes. The museum opens daily except Tuesday from 10:00 to 18:00, last entry 17:00, all year. The grounds are open from 8:00 to 22:00.
The Slovak National Museum's opening hours do not change with the seasons for the castle itself. What does change is the Baroque garden: from November to February it opens from 9:00 to 16:00. Avoid Tuesdays if you want to go inside.
The admission fees stay the same: 14 euros for adults, which includes the Treasury and the exhibition in the Northern Walls, 7 euros for children and students, 8 euros for seniors aged 62 to 69. Under-6s, over-70s and Bratislava Card holders go free. More in our Bratislava Castle guide.

What are Devín Castle's winter opening hours and prices?
From November to February, Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 16:00 (last entry 15:15); closed on Mondays. Adults pay 6 euros from November to March.
The Bratislava City Museum, which runs Devín, closes the castle on Mondays all year and on 24, 25, 26 and 31 December and 1 January. Last entry is 45 minutes before closing, so on a winter day you need to be at the gate by 15:15. In March it stays open until 17:00.
Winter prices are lower than summer ones. With the light gone by late afternoon, plan Devín for the morning or midday and the Old Town for later. Getting there and what to see are in our Devín Castle guide.

Which day of the week is best for a winter Bratislava day trip?
Wednesday to Sunday: both castles are open. In Advent, Friday to Sunday add the catamaran.
Bratislava Castle's museum closes on Tuesdays and Devín Castle on Mondays. The Advent catamaran only sails Friday to Sunday (and on 8 December). Put those together: Wednesday to Sunday both castles are open, and from Friday to Sunday in Advent the boat runs too. Fit Devín and the castle museum into one boat day and you will be rushing, since the Advent boat gives you under five hours.

Both castles in one winter day, with pickup in Vienna and a guide all the way.
Check dates for Bratislava and Devín CastleWhich Bratislava tours from Vienna still make sense in winter?
Tours with door-to-door transport and a guide work best: the Devín small-group day and the private local-guide tour. In town, the Prešporáčik saves the cold climb.
The Devín Castle small-group tour runs with pickup in Vienna and a guide all day; a February 2026 guest had a small group and wrote that it never felt rushed. Book a Tuesday to Sunday if you hope to go inside Devín. The private local-guide tour adapts to the weather: one March guest's guide rebuilt the day around freezing rain.
Already in Bratislava, the Prešporáčik vehicle tour drives up to the castle and Slavín; a March guest found it warm inside with see-through flaps against the rain. The coach and catamaran day needs the boat to get home, so check your date against the Advent sailings.
How do you get to Bratislava from Vienna without the boat?
Train or the Slovak Lines bus, both all year, or a tour with pickup.
The regular Slovak Lines bus leaves from stop C1 at the Vienna Hauptbahnhof bus station; the bus trip with lunch uses the 9:50 departure, which reaches Most SNP, under the bridge, at 11:20. Trains run from Vienna Hauptbahnhof to Bratislava hlavná stanica; our train guide covers tickets and the walk into town.
Pack for cold, wind off the Danube and cobbles that can be slick, and carry a passport or ID card. Slovakia uses the euro, so no currency change from Vienna.

Skip the icy climb: the Prešporáčik drives up to the castle and Slavín with an audio guide.
