Coach out, boat back

A coach takes you from central Vienna to Bratislava, a local guide walks you through the Old Town for two hours, and the Twin City Liner catamaran brings you back up the Danube in the evening. Book it for the boat: it's the only tour on this site that puts the river into the day.

Bratislava Day Trip with Danube Catamaran

About this experience

Vienna Sightseeing Tours runs the classic version of the Bratislava day. You meet the coach at the Vienna State Opera from April to October, or at the Vienna International Bus Terminal from November to March (selected hotels get a pickup), and ride east across the border. On the coach there is no guide: the listing says so, and reviewers repeat it. In Bratislava a local guide takes the group on a two-hour walk past the Old Town sights, the Rococo Grassalkovich Palace and the Primate's Palace.

Then you are on your own. The itinerary blocks about six hours of free time before the Twin City Liner sails you back to the pier at Franz-Josefs-Kai in Vienna, and some guests used the time to climb to Bratislava Castle on their own. Others found it too long. Guests report paying about 10 euros each to switch to the 14:30 boat instead of the 18:30 sailing included with the tour, which on the Twin City Liner timetable docks in Vienna at 20:00.

Be clear on the rating before you book. It sits at 3.6 from 755 reviews, the lowest of the day tours here. The complaints repeat: a guide who said little about the city, a coach that goes only one way (some guests expected the boat both ways), and a return in the dark in autumn. The price of about $107 is a sale that the listing shows until 31 October; the regular price is about $116. For a better-rated day with a guide on board, look at the Devín Castle small-group tour.

  • A two-hour guided walk of the Old Town with a local guide

What guests say

★★★★★

It is a great day trip. The guide in Bratislava was excellent and provided a great deal of information about the country and its history. The old city is relatively compact so even people like myself with walking issues can manage it.

Tips before you book

  • The boat back is the late one. If six free hours sound like too much, guests report paying about 10 euros each to switch to the 14:30 sailing.
  • The coach goes only to Bratislava. If you want the boat in both directions, buy Twin City Liner tickets yourself instead.
  • The Twin City Liner's 2026 high season ends on 2 November. After that the boat sails only on Advent weekends, so read your confirmation for how you get back on a November date.
  • Lunch is not included.
  • Seats on the catamaran are assigned. One reviewer ended up with poor seats, so ask at boarding if you want a window.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Bratislava catamaran day trip by boat both ways?

No. You go to Bratislava by coach and come back on the Twin City Liner catamaran. A few reviewers expected the boat both ways and were disappointed, so plan for one river leg.

How long is the guided part of the tour?

Two hours. A local guide leads the Old Town walk in Bratislava; there is no guide on the coach. The rest of the day, about six hours on the itinerary, is free time.

Can I take an earlier boat back to Vienna?

Guests report changing to the 14:30 sailing for about 10 euros per person, paid to the boat company. The included return is the 18:30 sailing, which reaches Vienna at 20:00.

Does the tour include Bratislava Castle?

Not the museum. The castle interior ticket is excluded, and adults pay 14 euros at the castle. Many guests walk up during their free time. See our Bratislava Castle guide.
