Booking choice: The coach and catamaran day, from $107 per person. Check dates Tour details
Most of what visitors come for is within a 20-minute walk: the Old Town lanes, St Martin's Cathedral, the Main Square and the castle on its hill. Some guests on the classic tour found they had more free time than they needed, so a plan helps.
The route below assumes you arrive mid-morning and leave in the late afternoon or evening.
The quick answer
Start at Michael's Gate, walk the Old Town to the Main Square and the Primate's Palace, see St Martin's Cathedral, then climb to Bratislava Castle for the view. After lunch, add the Blue Church, the UFO deck on the Most SNP bridge, or Devín Castle if you have a car or a tour. Four to six hours covers the essentials.

Is one day enough for Bratislava?
Yes for the highlights: the Old Town, the cathedral and the castle fit comfortably into four to six hours.
Some guests on the classic tour say the city is compact and that the long free time was more than enough. If you want museums, Devín Castle and a long lunch, a full day is well used.
Want a guide for the first two hours? The catamaran day starts with a guided Old Town walk.

At Michael's Gate, the last surviving gate of the old city walls, then walk down Michalská street into the Old Town.
From there it is a few minutes to the Main Square with Roland's Fountain and the Old Town Hall, and to the Primate's Palace behind it.

Why is St Martin's Cathedral famous?
It was the coronation church of the Kingdom of Hungary from 1563 to 1830, where eleven kings and queens and eight consorts were crowned.
Maria Theresa was crowned here in 1741. Look up at the spire: it carries a gilded replica of the Hungarian crown.

How do you get up to Bratislava Castle?
On foot from the cathedral: a short but steep walk uphill on steps and cobbled lanes.
The grounds are open from 8 AM to 10 PM and the view takes in the Danube and the Most SNP bridge. The museum inside costs 14 euros and is closed on Tuesdays. See the Bratislava Castle guide.

Rather not walk uphill? The vintage Prešporáčik vehicle stops at the castle and Slavín with an audio guide.
Explore the Prešporáčik city tour Tour detailsWhat should you eat?
Bryndzové halušky, small potato dumplings with sheep's cheese and bacon, Slovakia's national dish.
Old Town restaurants serve it alongside cabbage soup and local beer. Reviews of the set-menu lunch on the bus-with-lunch tour are mixed.

What is there to do in the afternoon?
The Blue Church, the UFO deck on the Most SNP bridge, the Slavín memorial, or a café on the riverfront.
The Church of St Elizabeth, known as the Blue Church, is a short walk east of the Old Town. The UFO tower has an observation deck about 95 metres up, open daily, with tickets at the tower (u-f-o.sk). Slavín is a hilltop memorial with wide views.

Can you fit in Devín Castle?
Yes, if you start early: city bus 29 from the Most SNP stop takes about 20 minutes (check the city timetable), or let a tour drive you.
The small-group tour via Hainburg includes Devín, and private guides can add it. See the Devín Castle guide.
Want both castles in one day? The small-group tour adds Devín with pickup in Vienna.

Spring to early autumn for the river and the outdoor cafés; late November and December for the Christmas market.
Avoid Tuesdays if you want the castle museum, and check Slovak public holidays, when many shops close.
